Surgery Day

Lil man had tubes and a scope done yesterday morning. So I dreamt all night we were going to be late... I wake up and it's sun light out.. We both slept through the 2 alarms. Anyways took a 5 min shower and made a cup of coffee and we were on our way. While we were checking in, we ran into our friends and their little one who would be on the same floor as us.. So they take lil man in at 9am and we watch the screen to track his progress.. The dr comes and finds us and says he's done! The TV didn't even say so.. He said things went great and he's in recovery and we could go back soon. He got the tubes in place and found his voice box is swollen. He thinks it's from reflux and gave us some reflux meds. Jay had 6oz of sugar water in recovery and another bottle of formula before we left the hospital.

Rockin the peach gown.... Weighing at 16# 11oz and 2ft 1 in tall..

2nd floor holding... We are first on the list

And were out! We did great!

It was only a matter of time...

Lilman is going in for surgery at the beginning of next month. He is have tubes placed and a scope done. He'll be 8 months 5 months adjusted. I'm hoping that this does the trick to his ear issues.. He's been having breathing issues since the beginning of the month. He lost his tiny voice and was wheezing. So the started a nebulizer treatment, see you back in another week. went back and ears are full of fluid and ear infection. Here's some antibiotics, see u in 2 weeks. Called the ENT, they said see you tue. Sat am, back to the dr for a side effect of antibiotics. ENT schedules surgery and changes antibiotic... In the mix of that, we got the go ahead to start solids!!

And now begins breathing treatments....

So lil man lost his voice and has been coughing. He's 28 weeker now 7.5 months. Went in for a check up and they gave him a breathing treatment. Seemed to be doing better now. Rinse and repeat for the next 4 days. Going back on Friday for a recheck. He doesn't have a fever, but they never really said what his issue was.. Just a cold with wheezing.. The doc was like i'm surprised he hasn't had any treatments since he was born.. I thought that was kind of weird. Anyways, there goes my dr free week i was planning...

Jay's birth story and then some

Jay's story began in April of 2012, just after April fools day. In 2011, I told everyone I was pregnant, which I was, and nobody believed me. So in 2012, I posted Irish Twins.. I like to think that's where his story began. I had no clue I was even pregnant when I posted that. On April 7th, we found out we were expecting!!! So lil man April fooled me.. haha. He is out 4th child. Julie who is almost 9 was born 35 weeks, Jayde who just turned 7 was over due, Jessica who is now 15 month was born at 34 weeks and Baby Jay who is now 5 months old was born at 28 weeks. Jessica was due 12/5/11 and Jay 12/10/12. Making them close enough to Irish twins. So July comes along and we go in for the gender u/s, we found 2 lines instead of 3!! Bot it is!! Who knew after 3 girls, #4 would be a boy.

Since #3 was born at 34 weeks, my dr. suggested for me to get Mekenna shots. I started those at 16 weeks because I got a grant from Makenna. While trying to get them covered through insurance, I ended up switching drs at 20 weeks. Everything was meant for a reason. The new Dr. decided it would be a great idea to visit Fetal Testing. So now I was on weekly apts for the shots, biweekly apt for u/s to track lil man's growth. I went through biweekly u/s with #3 from 28 weeks on due to growth restriction. All the drs said he was doing great and decided I didn't need to take the Makenna shots anymore, so we stopped. On a Sunday afternoon at work, I wasn't feeling right. i just couldn't get comfortable. I ignored it and went on with my business. So the next day at the ob office, they checked me and did a Fetal fibronectin test . They told me it would be a good idea to get my beta shots. The informed me that I would prob be staying the night in the hospital. I had beta shots with #3, so I knew what was going on. I actually requested them 2 weeks prior, but they didn't feel I was at the point of needing them. Anyways, I had a Fetal testing apt that afternoon, so off to the hospital I went. Another dr in the practice was in L&D so she sent up for my labs I brought from the office. FT determined that I was dilating and my cervix was shortening yet again. So after my apt, I went to L&D to get monitored. Come to find out, I'm contracting every 5 mins or so. I received 1st set of beta shots, they pumped me with fluid and then tried to stop my labor with meds. This all happened on a monday. With all the meds and the drs efforts to stop labor, I dilated to 7cm. My dr talked with a couple of high risk docs and she decided that it was best for him to be born. So on wed 9/19/12 they started the induction process. At 10:01am our lil man was born with only 1 push at 2#7oz. I was in the middle of filling out my epidural paperwork and I knew there was no waiting anymore. My body was ready to push. They yelled at me and told me to wait for NICU. My response was get ready to catch him!! Well this is when out long journey in the hospital began. I was able to hold him for a min before they rushed him up to the NICU. He was healthy enough for me to hold him a quick min.

This was our 2nd journey in the NICU. Jessica spent 19 days in there. I knew somethings to expect, but being born much earlier and smaller, there was a whole new set of challenges he would be facing. I was lucky enough to be well enough to go visit him soon after he was born. When I got up there, he was hooked up to a ventilator and many other ivs. I was unable to hold him until they did a head u/s at 4 days old to make sure he didn't have any brain bleeds.

So Doc Al, came in and gave us the talk. He explained many things to us that we just never knew about. We had to sign consents for pic lines and blood transfusions. Both are risky procedures, but worth doing. After they determined Jay didn't have any brain bleeds, they inserted a pic line. It's kinda like an IV, but for long term. At just 13 days old, Jay needed to receive 2 blood transfusions. I was able to hold him for the 1st time at 8 days old. We got to Kangaroo! I did this also with #3. It was much harder to do with all the machines and lines. I also wanted to add daddy's 1st time holding his 1st boy!

We went through a tons of up in gaining weight and less machine to downs of more machines and failed tests. The eye Dr determined he had ROP. Just before he was sent home, they did the NB hearing screening. After 4 times taking it, it was determined that he needed to be referred for his hearing. So that meant add another specialist to the list. All we needed for lilman to break out of the NICU was to maintain temp, oral feeds for 48 hours and do destating. He also needed to pass his car seat challenge.

On Nov 19, which was day 61, we got the go ahead to come home!!! I was excited and over whelmed. This would mean 2 babies at home!! This would be Jessica's 1st time meeting Jay since she was too young to go into the NICU. It was a nice feeling to have everyone under 1 roof.

And when they girls got home from school, they weren't shy about holding their baby brother for the 1st time.

Jay spent daddy's bday, Jessica's 1st bday and his 1st Halloween in the hospital.

Our NICU made these awesome signs for his milestones..

Our NICU journey ended and the home journey began. Jay was sent home without equipment, but lots of medical support. We had a home nurse visit for the first few weeks, visited eye dr until cleared for ROP and then to the hearing specialists fr his failed nb hearing screening. In Jan he was cleared of ROP and then he failed his ABR test. They determined that he has severe hearing loss. Not something everyone wants to hear, but just another chapter in his life. Lil Man is thriving. He is still gaining 1oz per day since he came home from the hospital. We go in for repeat ABR in March and also to the developmental clinic to see what his delays are.

Jessica is on the left at 5 months old and Jay on the right.
